Artist Statement

Kathleen Mooney, ISEA - NF, NWS          kathleenmooney.com

Digging deep into the human drive to create, I use signs and symbols, color and mark making, Neolithic art and archeology to form thought provoking contemporary abstract paintings and clay work.

I love to create.  Art is an inescapable and demanding and joyful process.

All of my life I have been balancing precious resources of time, money and energy.  I have worked with some of the best artists and instructors on the planet.  They have encouraged me to follow my art in whatever path it leads me - always experimental in materials, technique, attitude and concept.

I think about art, read about art, study art, teach art and create art... 10,000 hours so far and hopefully another 10,000 hours ahead of me!

My art has been accepted 6 consecutive times in the annual juried exhibits of ISEA - The International Society of Experimental Artists - I have been awarded Nautilus Fellow Signature status in ISEA.  In 2011 I was awarded Signature status in the National Watercolor Society - NWS.  My art has been awarded an ISEA Cutting edge Award in 2010 and an NWS national tour in 2011.  My art has been selected in Europe and the USA for corporate, public, medical facility and private collections.  My paintings have 3 times been invited to hang in the Michigan State Capitol building.  I have had solo public exhibits in Michigan public libraries, Art and Cultural Centers and governmental offices.

I own Fire and Water ART - a fabulous 1600 square foot gallery in Lowell, Michigan.  Here I have my working studio, teach classes and enjoy the company of 25 leading award winning local artists.  Fire and Water ART holds thousands of original artworks and the largest selection of unframed original artwork in the area.  It is a great old building with high ceilings, wooden floors, colorful walls and wonderful art.  Come in and explore our art, artist made gifts and custom framing.   We have been here on Main Street in historic Lowell for five years.

Fire and Water Art got its name from the Fire used in creating my jewelry, clay, glass and sculpture and Water from the watercolor, acrylic and water-media used in my paintings.  Water is an important influence in my art!

I love to travel and try to get to Ireland every year - the colors are great, the history is deep and the ocean is beautiful!  Here in Michigan I try to spend a lot of time in my kayak exploring local rivers, the big lake and the Upper Peninsula.

I create artwork to raise awareness of the steps we can each take to protect our natural resources and precious waters.  I work with Save The Wild U.P. to protect and defend the Yellow Dog River near Marquette www.savethewildup.org and  The Waterkeeper Alliance -  an international group that works to protect and restore water quality - everything from tiny streams to the vast oceans www.waterkeeper.org
